We’ll take up a new book for discussion starting this month—“J” by Jaroslav Pelikan. Pelikan examines the ways Jesus is understood in different cultures and at different times over the past 2000 years. Instead of a single common view of who Jesus is and his teachings based on the Gospels, what emerges is a complex dialogue of faith and values, culture and aspiration in relationship to the vision of Christ and his promised future.
Is Jesus a Jewish rabbi or the Light of the Gentiles?
King of kings or Prince of peace?
The source of divine authority for earthly rulers or liberator of the oppressed?
In our class discussion, we’ll explore these different images of Jesus in history, the multiple emerging images in our present age and our own faith relationship with Christ.
Our first class will meet on Sunday, January 21st at 9:00 am in the fellowship hall. Copies of the book can be purchased on Amazon or ordered through your favorite bookstore. Let Pastor Zook know if you’ll be participating in this study.
